Kamala Harris Float in Mount Pleasant Halloween Parade

November 1, 2024

The Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh in alignment with the National Urban League is deeply concerned about the recent incident at the Halloween parade in Mount Pleasant, where individuals displayed a disturbing portrayal of Vice President Kamala Harris in chains and shackles. This act is not only disrespectful to our Vice President but also to the communities we serve, as it perpetuates harmful stereotypes and evokes painful historical memories that continue to impact marginalized groups.

Such imagery goes beyond a mere Halloween costume; it symbolizes a disregard for the dignity of individuals in positions of leadership, particularly those from underrepresented communities. We must recognize that our words and actions carry significant weight and displays like this serve to further divide us rather than unite us.

As an organization dedicated to promoting equity, inclusion, and social justice, we strongly reject any form of expression that seeks to demean or dehumanize individuals based on their race, gender, or political beliefs. Our community thrives when we engage in respectful dialogue and seek to understand one another, rather than resorting to inflammatory rhetoric or divisive actions.

We also stand in solidarity with the National Urban League, which shares our commitment to advancing racial equality and social justice. Together, we advocate for a society where all individuals are treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their background or beliefs.

We call upon our community members to reflect on the impact of their actions and to choose pathways that promote understanding and compassion. Together, we can build a more inclusive society where everyone is valued and respected.

Let us stand united against hate and division, and work towards a future that embraces diversity and fosters unity.
