Hunger Services

Efforts to End Hunger in Pittsburgh

The Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh shares a deep commitment to ending hunger in the Pittsburgh region. Hunger Services offers two programs to help secure food for your family, including Emergency Food Assistance (EFA) and Food for Early Development (FED). These services are provided to individuals or families who reside in Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Greene, Lawrence, Washington and Westmoreland Counties.

How Hunger Services Helps Families

To help families meet their food needs, we offer:

Immediate Food Support

Families in urgent need receive quick, reliable referrals to food resources that address hunger during critical moments.

Long-Term Pantry Connections

EFA ensures every family is connected to a neighborhood pantry for ongoing assistance beyond emergency use.

Support for Infants and Young Children

FED provides formula and soft foods to promote healthy growth for children whose families need additional nutritional support.

Access Across Multiple Counties

Services reach families throughout seven counties, ensuring widespread support and barrier-free access to food assistance.

Hunger Services for Pittsburgh Families

Hunger Services provides essential food assistance through two key programs designed to support families in need. The Emergency Food Assistance (EFA) program offers critical referrals to local food pantries, while the Food for Early Development (FED) program supplies formula and soft foods for infants and young children.

Together, these programs help ensure families across the region have access to nutritious food when they need it most.

Emergency Food Assistance (EFA)

The EFA helps eligible families living in Allegheny County get food when the need is greatest. The EFA is the official neighborhood food pantry referral agent for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank (GPCFB). The EFA refers eligible family living in Allegheny County to a broad network of neighborhood food pantries and community feeding facilities. Use of the emergency pantry is a once-a-year safety net, but every family served is given a neighborhood food pantry referral.

Food For Early Development (FED)

FED helps eligible families that do not receive WIC benefits. FED offers baby formula and soft foods.
