One of the Pillars of Economic Self-Reliance

Homeownership

Achieve the Dream of Homeownership with The Urban League

The Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh is committed to helping individuals and families achieve their goal of owning a home. Through education, counseling, and partnerships with trusted lenders and real estate professionals, our Homeownership Program provides the tools, guidance, and resources needed to make the home-buying process accessible and successful, especially for first-time homebuyers.

How Our Homeownership Program Supports Individuals & Families

Purchasing a home is a key step toward long-term stability and building a foundation for generational wealth. To help empower individuals and families in this transition, we provide:

Comprehensive Education

Gain the knowledge you need through PHFA-certified workshops that prepare you for each step of the home-buying process.

Personalized Counseling

Receive individualized credit reviews, financial action plans, and ongoing guidance from HUD-certified housing counselor.

Trusted Local Partnership

Connect with banks, lenders, and real estate professionals who understand the needs of first-time homebuyers.

Down Payment Assistance

Eligible participants can access PHARE assistance to help cover down payments and closing costs.

Empowering First-Time Homebuyers

Many aspiring homeowners feel overwhelmed by the financial, credit, and logistical steps required to purchase a home. Our comprehensive program helps remove these barriers by offering structured education, personalized counseling, and support at every stage of the home-buying journey.

We work closely with the Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh and the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA) to create high-quality educational experiences and connect clients with opportunities designed specifically for first-time buyers.

Down Payment Assistance Through PHARE (PHFA)

The Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh participates in the PHARE program through PHFA, which provides down payment and closing cost assistance for eligible first-time homebuyers.

To qualify for PHARE assistance, participants must:

  • Meet income guidelines (50% of the area median income)
  • Complete the required PHFA homebuyer certificate
  • Work with our HUD-certified housing counselor to assess qualifications and determine next steps.

This additional support helps make homeownership attainable for families who may struggle to save for upfront costs.

Trusted Partnerships to Support Your Journey

We maintain relationships with local banks, real estate agents, and lending partners who understand the needs of first-time homebuyers. Clients receive a list of trusted partners they can choose from when preparing to shop for a home.

Our team helps buyers understand what is realistic for their budget, credit situation, and long-term goals—ensuring they enter the housing market with clarity and confidence.
