About the Black Female Leadership Development Institute (BFLDI)

The Black Female Leadership Development Institute (BFLDI) is a FREE program that brings African American girls in grades nine through twelve together to participate in a year-long program designed to increase educational and leadership opportunities for the selected participants.

Students will improve on practical skills such as networking, teamwork, leadership, critical thinking, and collaboration in order to impact local, national, and global communities.

The program is offered at no cost to participants due to the generous support of our donors, ensuring that every young person can take part without any financial obligation.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the Black Female Leadership Development Institute (BFLDI), applicants must be African American girls in grades 9–12 who demonstrate strong character, a commitment to personal growth, and the ability to fully participate in a year-long leadership program.

Application

Answer a series of essay questions.

Report Card

Participants must be a high school student in good standing based on academic performance and good character.

Attendance Record

Participants must provide a document showing a good attendance record.

BFLDI Program Overview

BFLDI is a multi-faceted program that encapsulates dynamic workshops, student discussion groups (sister circles), and engage in a week long residential program on the Slippery Rock University campus. The weeklong program is followed by the BMLDI Saturday Institute, which is an ongoing year-round series of activities and workshops.

Program Sessions

  • Virtual SessionsVirtual Sessions will follow in September with bi-weekly Wednesday sessions and monthly Saturday Leadership Institutes workshops.
  • Saturday Leadership Institute WorkshopsSaturday Leadership Institute workshops will be facilitated by professional women in the Southwestern Pennsylvania region who will expose participants to multiple facets of leadership, financial empowerment, STEM/STEAM related careers and topics, communication, and problem-solving.
  • Nationally Recognized Leadership ProgramsStudents will participate in nationally recognized leadership programs. All participants will become members of the Girl Scouts of Western Pennsylvania and will form their own troop. Students will work towards badge completion through the Girl Scout curriculum.

Additional Requirements

  • Dress CodeDress code is casual. Some virtual sessions will require business or more formal attire, which will be communicated, as necessary. Please see the dress code policy for further details (which will be received during orientation).
