Five Elements of Nature (FEN)

Aeronautics/Flight/Air

Opening the Skies Through STEM and Aeronautics

The Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh (ULGP) is committed to revitalizing STEM education and creating meaningful opportunities for middle and high school students in our community. Aeronautics, the science of flight, is one of the most inspiring ways to connect students to the many possibilities of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

The Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh’s Aeronautics program is more than a class—it’s a launchpad. By combining hands-on learning, advanced technology, and real-world aviation experiences, students discover a pathway into STEM fields that can transform their futures.

But we cannot do this alone. Without access, these opportunities remain a dream for many students, but with your support, they become a reality.

Cockpit Controls and Instruments

The ULGP will teach the basic understanding of the cockpit controls and the significance of each instrument. The instruments in question are:

  1. Airspeed Indicator
  2. Attitude Indicator
  3. Altimeter
  4. Turn Coordinator
  5. Heading Indicator
  6. Vertical Speed Indicator

Flight Instruction

Flight instruction is provided via a program designed and developed by the Microsoft corporation called “Flight Simulator.” The ULGP has also partnered with the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics (PIA), which will provide another element of learning in conjunction with field trips to the institute, along with the Greater Pittsburgh International Airport. The students will also tour Allegheny County Airport and will co-pilot a plane as part of their experience.
